Kenyans have been left in stitches after a man bearing an uncanny resemblance to President William Ruto surfaced at a church event, sparking a social media frenzy that shows no signs of slowing down.
The man, identified as David Murimi, was captured on camera addressing congregants at what appeared to be a church gathering in Embakasi. Dressed sharply in a white shirt and black trousers, Murimi stepped up to deliver a praise report alongside a choir from the area.
From the moment he opened his mouth, the crowd was already murmuring. “Bwana asifiwe! Kwa majina ni David Murimi. Kristu ni mwokozi wa maisha yangu,” he declared with confidence.
But it was what happened next that sealed the deal. As he continued speaking, someone in the crowd was heard exclaiming, “Anakaa Ruto!”—drawing murmurs of agreement from others who couldn’t believe their eyes.
The video, shared widely across social media, has since collected thousands of views and reactions. On X (formerly Twitter), user The Mayor posted the clip with the caption, “Kumbe Ruto ako ndugu?”—jokingly suggesting the president might have a hidden sibling.
Another user, Paul Gitau, doubled down, commenting, “More like a twin brother.”
But the comment that truly captured the internet’s imagination came from user Etila, who quipped: “Kasongo on a budget.”
And just like that, a new meme was born.
This isn’t the first time a Ruto lookalike has emerged from the shadows. In 2014, Arnold Cheloti Ndukuyu from Webuye made headlines for his striking resemblance to the then-Deputy President, with mobs often mistaking him for the politician in public.
In 2025, a boda boda rider went viral after being filmed joking about “Kazi kwa Vijana” and mimicking the president’s voice at a stage. “Kazi nitapanga. Nitapanga kazi kwa vijana,” he said, sending TikTokers into a frenzy.
And then there was the matatu passenger spotted earlier that same year—simply sitting, touching his face, looking straight ahead—who was immediately dubbed the “low-budget Kasongo.”
But Murimi’s appearance at the church event seems to have hit differently. Maybe it’s the setting. Maybe it’s the way he carried himself. Or maybe it’s the fact that he was doing something so wholesome—praising God alongside a choir—while unintentionally becoming the internet’s latest obsession.
Either way, Kenyans are eating it up.
The reactions have been pouring in across platforms. Some are calling for Murimi to be given a government role—at least in the viral sense. Others are wondering if there’s a factory somewhere producing Ruto duplicates. A few have even joked that the president himself might need to start watching his back at public events.
“Imagine Ruto walks into a church and finds this guy already there,” one user wrote. “Who gets the security detail?”
As for Murimi himself? He hasn’t said much beyond his initial remarks at the event. But if history is anything to go by, he might be in for a wild ride. Lookalikes in Kenya often ride the wave of viral fame into paid appearances, brand deals, and even political endorsements.
For now, the title “Kasongo on a budget” belongs to him. And honestly? It’s a pretty good one to have.
