The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reported two dramatic narcotics busts involving unconventional smuggling tactics and high-speed evasion attempts across Nairobi and Kiambu counties.

In the first incident, a routine station visit resulted in an immediate arrest when a woman attempted to bypass police security using tampered food items. On Monday, September 21, 2026, 26-year-old Bernice Achieng arrived at the Buruburu Police Station report desk. Her objective was to deliver a loaf of bread to her boyfriend, who is currently being held in custody.

However, the unsealed packaging of the bread raised immediate suspicion among the officers on duty. A thorough inspection revealed five rolls of suspected bhang (cannabis) and a matchbox carefully hollowed out and buried deep within the loaf. A subsequent physical search of Achieng led to the discovery of an additional seven rolls of the narcotic concealed in her jacket pocket, bringing the total recovery to 12 rolls. She was immediately detained and is currently awaiting arraignment, with the seized rolls held as evidence.

Separately, a police roadblock in Kairi, Thika West, triggered a high-speed motorcycle pursuit that resulted in a substantial narcotics recovery. The suspect, identified as John Mwangi, widely known by his alias “Bombay,” was traveling with an unidentified female pillion passenger when they encountered the checkpoint.

According to the police report, Mwangi accelerated the motorcycle in a desperate bid to evade the officers. The chase concluded abruptly near Ree Supermarket when the rider misjudged a speed bump, losing control and crashing the motorcycle. In the ensuing chaos, the female passenger managed to vanish into the gathering crowd. Her identity remains unknown, and she is currently at large.

Mwangi was apprehended at the crash site. A search of his motorcycle cargo yielded 300 individual rolls of bhang. Officers also recovered an additional three kilograms of the drug tightly wrapped in yellow polythene and strapped securely to the motorcycle seat. Mwangi was subsequently booked at Kimuchu Police Station, where he is undergoing processing ahead of his court appearance.

The twin arrests form part of an ongoing, nationwide crackdown by the National Police Service targeting illicit narcotics distribution networks and the creative methods smugglers are employing to bypass law enforcement.

Should security protocols be heightened at all police stations regarding food items brought in by visitors for detainees?
