Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has publicly amplified a bold demand for a unified, multi-faction opposition alliance aimed at challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

During a recent public gathering, Kenyatta created a highly strategic political moment when he interrupted the proceedings to call Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina back to the podium. The retired head of state, signaling to his ear that he wanted to ensure he heard her correctly, personally adjusted the microphone for the legislator and instructed her to repeat a fiery political declaration she had just made regarding opposition unity.

“Nirudie nisirudie? (Should I repeat it or not?)” Maina asked the cheering crowd before delivering her ultimatum.

Maina outlined a strict directive aimed at top political figures currently operating outside the ruling government structure. She specifically named Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, recently ousted Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.

According to Maina, the Kenyan electorate is demanding that these leaders set aside their individual ambitions and lock themselves in a room to negotiate a consensus.

“Citizens are saying you should enter one house and decide,” Maina declared on stage. “But when you come out of there, give us one candidate to send Kasongo home”.

Within current Kenyan political rhetoric, “Kasongo” serves as a thinly veiled moniker used by critics to refer to President William Ruto.

Maina issued a stern warning to the political heavyweights, urging them to abandon internal bickering and selfishness. “The enemy is one,” she stated, adding that by the time the 2027 election arrives, the proposed coalition must present a single, undisputed candidate to take the presidency. She also cautioned that any politician who refuses to support the chosen consensus candidate will be immediately labeled a political mole.

The Gachagua Factor and Shifting Alliances

The explicit inclusion of Rigathi Gachagua in the proposed opposition lineup highlights a rapidly shifting political landscape. Following his bitter fallout and subsequent removal from the Kenya Kwanza administration, Gachagua’s political base in the Mount Kenya region is increasingly being courted by traditional opposition figures.

By grouping Gachagua with veteran opposition leaders like Kalonzo and Karua, the declaration points to early grassroots efforts to engineer a massive political machine capable of bridging the mountain voting bloc with traditional opposition strongholds across the country.

Kenyatta, who smiled throughout Maina’s passionate delivery, immediately downplayed his own involvement in the 2027 political strategizing once she finished speaking.

Stepping back to the microphone, the former president joked about his retired status. “I am no longer in politics,” Kenyatta laughed. “I just went to fetch her because I wanted to hear if I heard that correctly”.

Despite his denial, Kenyatta’s deliberate move to amplify the message on a public stage indicates he is keeping a close watch on the formation of potential alliances ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Will a coalition featuring historically opposed figures like Gachagua and Kalonzo hold together until the 2027 General Election?
