Kenya’s boxing community is in deep mourning following the death of Kisumu-based professional boxer Jacob “Jack Spoiler” Oyoko, who collapsed during a match at the Mumias Cultural Centre in Kakamega County on Saturday, March 28, 2026 .

The Kenya Professional Boxing Commission (KPBC) confirmed the tragic development, stating that Oyoko passed away despite immediate medical intervention . According to the commission, ringside medics administered CPR and oxygen before rushing him to the hospital, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful .

The bout was part of a fight card organized by Kakamega-based politician and former Sports CS Rashid Echesa .

What Really Happened in the Ring?

Details emerging from the bout paint a troubling picture. According to reports, Oyoko visibly dropped his guard during the closing exchanges, appearing unable to continue . His opponent, Julius Okuruchi, continued pressing forward with head shots even as the situation seemed to deteriorate .

The question on everyone’s mind: Why wasn’t the fight stopped earlier?

Videos circulating on social media show Oyoko looking defenseless in his final moments, with many viewers questioning whether the referee should have stepped in long before the situation turned fatal

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has been vocal in his criticism, insisting the tragedy could have been prevented .

“I wish to condole with the family of Jacob Oyoko, who was killed in the boxing ring by one Julius Okuruchi,” Alai stated. He further blamed boxing authorities and event organizers, adding: “The death of Jacob would have been prevented had the Kenya Boxing Federation and the promoters of the tournament paid attention to the safety and needs of the players” .

Alai also questioned the conduct of officials during the match, saying: “The conduct of the KBF officials and the referee in the whole match is questionable” .

Others have directed criticism at Oyoko’s opponent, Julius Okuruchi, suggesting he should have recognized that his opponent was in distress. However, these remain matters of public opinion as investigations continue .The Kenya Professional Boxing Commission has formed an independent review committee comprising external medical experts, legal professionals, and senior boxing officials to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident .
