Sheryl Gabriella Reflects on Changed Family Treatment at Father’s Funeral

Kenyan TikToker and digital influencer Sheryl Gabriella has opened up about the stark shift in how her extended family treats her following her financial success, using her father’s recent burial as a prime example. Speaking during a TikTok Live broadcast on Sunday, September 6, 2026, the creator detailed how the “small, small money” she has accumulated completely altered the reception her family received during their mourning period.

Her father, Joseph Kipkoech Mutai, passed away on August 8, 2026, and was laid to rest on August 15. Reflecting on the emotional event, Sheryl noted that arriving at the burial in a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX seemed to command a new level of respect from her relatives. “I wish you guys had followed me to my dad’s burial and seen how well I was being treated because I had small, small money,” she told her live audience. She emphasized that this reception was a sharp departure from the past, stating, “The way they were treating us is not the same way they treated us way back when we did not have money… the treatment changed because we now have little money”.

While Sheryl was highlighting the reality of how wealth dictates social standing within families, her remarks reignited a recent online controversy regarding her finances. Prior to her father’s death, the creator went viral for a rant in which she boasted about earning up to Ksh 500,000 a month from brand endorsements, while simultaneously throwing shade at people she described as “broke girlfriends”. Consequently, when she launched a public Paybill appeal for funeral contributions following her father’s passing, netizens were quick to point out the glaring contrast between her self-proclaimed wealth and her request for public donations.

The intense online scrutiny also appeared to influence the physical turnout at the burial. Despite her immense popularity and numerous connections within Kenya’s digital entertainment space, the broader TikTok community was noticeably absent from the rural send-off. Only a tight-knit circle of fellow content creators, including Kabugi, Tiff Dolly, and Star Cherop, traveled to support Sheryl as she laid her father to rest. By publicly addressing the shifting dynamics at her rural home, Sheryl continues to navigate the complex intersection of internet fame, personal grief, and the societal expectations that come with newfound wealth.
