Eight years after the murder of university student Sharon Otieno, her family has submitted a victim impact statement to the High Court, outlining conditions for reconciliation with former Migori Governor Okoth Obado as he and two co-convicts await formal sentencing on September 16, 2026.
The court document details the heavy financial damage inflicted on the family throughout the long-running trial. Otieno’s parents disclosed that they were forced to liquidate family assets, including selling land and livestock, to cover legal and court-related expenses amounting to Sh4.67 million. The family is formally requesting full restitution for these trial costs to ease their current financial distress.
Beyond financial compensation, the family asked the court to ensure Obado fulfills a prior commitment to purchase a parcel of land and construct a permanent home for Otieno’s three surviving children. The submission emphasized the ongoing emotional and economic hardship of raising three young children without a mother or a reliable source of income.
The family’s statement arrives as Obado filed mitigation applications seeking leniency from the court, citing advancing age and chronic health conditions. Obado, alongside his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo and former Migori County clerk Caspal Obiero, faces final sentencing following their convictions over the September 2018 killing of the 26-year-old Rongo University student.
Trial judge Cecelia Githua will review the victim impact statement alongside probation assessment reports and mitigation filings from all three defense teams before delivering the final sentence on September 16.
