M-PESA Visa Virtual Card Hits 8.5 Million Transactions as International Digital Trade Booms

2 min read

The recent surge in M-PESA GlobalPay Visa usage marks a significant shift in how the Kenyan digital economy interacts with the rest of the world. With a 62% increase in active users reaching a total of 316,000, it is clear that the barrier to entry for international transactions has dropped significantly. This growth suggests that the local market is moving beyond basic peer-to-peer transfers and is now actively participating in global digital trade, whether for specialized software tools, digital assets, or personal entertainment.

When you look closer at the 8.5 million transactions totaling Sh12 billion, the average spend per transaction sits at roughly Sh1,411. This relatively low average indicates that the virtual card has become the primary engine for the “subscription economy” and micro-purchases. Instead of large-scale bulk imports, users are likely utilizing the card for recurring payments like Netflix and Spotify, or small-ticket items from international marketplaces like AliExpress. Interestingly, while the user base grew, the average annual spend per person dipped from approximately Sh44,600 to Sh37,900, which might reflect the broader economic pressures currently affecting individual purchasing power.

From a strategic standpoint, the GlobalPay feature is less about Safaricom’s immediate revenue and more about “platform stickiness.” Even though it only accounts for a tiny fraction of total M-PESA earnings, it ensures that the mobile wallet remains the central hub for all financial needs. By democratizing access to a Visa-backed global network, the service has effectively removed the necessity of a traditional bank account for engaging with the global internet, solidifying M-PESA’s role as an essential ecosystem for the modern digital citizen.
