Court Grants Zari Hassan and Sons Full Control of Ivan Ssemwanga Estate

After nearly a decade of bitter intra-family legal warfare, a family court has officially appointed socialite and businesswoman Zari Hassan and her three sons as the sole administrators of the late Ugandan tycoon Ivan Ssemwanga’s multi-million-dollar estate. The landmark ruling effectively strips Ssemwanga’s extended family of any managerial claims, ending years of highly publicized and hostile disputes over his vast business empire spanning South Africa and Uganda.

Ssemwanga, the flamboyant leader of the infamous “Rich Gang,” passed away in May 2017 after suffering a massive stroke in South Africa. He left behind a highly lucrative portfolio that includes Brooklyn City College—a profitable network of private colleges in South Africa—alongside prime real estate in Pretoria, Sandton, and Kampala, and a fleet of high-end luxury vehicles. Since his sudden death, Ssemwanga’s paternal relatives, led by his vocal uncles, have aggressively lobbied to block Zari from accessing or managing these assets, arguing that her subsequent relationship with Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz forfeited her status as a family representative.

Throughout the protracted dispute, Zari maintained that her primary objective was safeguarding the inheritance of their three sons: Pinto, Raphael, and Quincy. While Ssemwanga’s family accused her of greed, Zari countered with evidence of systemic asset-stripping attempts by her late ex-husband’s relatives. The court’s latest decree places the three boys at the center of the estate’s future, validating Zari’s long-held position that the wealth belonged strictly to Ssemwanga’s biological children rather than his extended family.

This judicial resolution builds upon a cultural transition that began years earlier. Ssemwanga’s eldest son, Pinto Ntale, was traditionally crowned as his father’s official heir during a family clan meeting in Uganda, but traditional recognition did not translate to immediate legal control, especially with Ssemwanga’s South African assets tied up in complex corporate structures. By securing this legal ruling, Zari and her legal team have successfully bridged the gap between traditional succession and actual financial custody, shielding the family’s crown jewel, Brooklyn City College, from further external interference.

With the court battle finally resolved, attention now shifts to the operational stability of the Ssemwanga properties. Zari, who has managed parts of the South African educational institute since Ssemwanga’s passing, is expected to formally transition more executive management duties to her sons as they come of age. The ruling stands as a significant victory for the businesswoman, proving that despite years of public character assassination and intense family feuds, her strategic legal patience has secured her children’s financial future.
